Teaching

Dr. Hartjes is a Clinical Associate Professor and the Track Coordinator within the Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Track. She teaches didactic and clinical courses for the graduate and doctoral programs.

Research

Dr. Hartjes’ research interests are centered on various critical care topics. Other concentration includes improving patient outcomes by improving nurse/patient processes and improving nurse education through the use of simulation.

  1. Co-Investigator: A Retrospective, Descriptive Study of Risk Factors Related to Pressure Ulcer Development among Patients in Intensive Care
  2. Co- Investigator: Study: Point of care (POC) Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) in critical care: An educational intervention for nurse practitioner (NP), physician assistant (PA) and anesthesia assistant (AA) students.
  3. Principle Investigator: A Retrospective, Descriptive Study of Risk Factors Related to Suspected Deep Tissue Injury Development among Patients in Intensive Care Unit
  4. Principal Investigator: “Secondary Data Analysis of the Malcolm Randal VAMC “CABG an Heart Valve Surgery Clinical Pathway for Early Mobility” Improvement Project
  5. Principal Investigator: “Incidence of Veterans in the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System over one year who require Mechanical Ventilation for greater than one week or Reintubation

Service

Dr. Hartjes is an active member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) and has serves in several volunteer positions within the organization. She has been invited to speak at many times at AACNs Annual Critical Care Conference, National Teaching Institute (NTI). She is a Content Expert for Acute Care Nurse Practitioner’s certification exam for the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She has served as editor for two publications, sits on four editorial boards, is an author and a peer reviewer for several nursing & critical care journals, and many critical care textbooks. Furthermore she has obtained Trainer status with End of Life Nursing Consortium (ELNEC) Course Adult and Pediatrics. Currently she is assisting with the implementation of Palliative Care with the critical care units at UF Health, Gainesville

Clinical practice area/expertise

Dr. Hartjes has 30 years of ICU experience, which has focused on surgical critical care and palliative care. She has worked in many different capacities such as staff nurse, Nurse Manager, Clinical Nurse Educator, Clinical Nurse Specialist and ARNP. In addition she has worked as Clinical Faculty with the University of Florida since 2005.
