Teaching: Dr. Poe teaches nurse-midwifery and research at the graduate level. She also teaches undergraduate practicum focused on maternity care. She has a special interest in increasing the number of nurse-midwives who provide care to individuals who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and/or underrepresented populations.

Research: Dr. Poe has focused on decreasing birth canal trauma since 1980. Her current research focuses on the relationship between joint laxity, the type of birth has provided and birth canal trauma. (link to BRC)

Service: Dr. Poe is a fellow in the American College of Nurse-Midwives. She is a past president of the ACNM Foundation, Inc. She is a member of the Northeast Florida Healthy Start Coalition and other organizations seeking to decrease infant mortality. She is a member of the Florida Nurses Association, the Jacobs Institute, AWHONN, and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society.

Clinical practice area/expertise: Her focus is full-scope nurse-midwifery and women’s health care. Dr. Poe has provided clinical care to underserved populations since 1973 and teaches nurse-midwifery clinical skills to graduate students in these settings. Another area of Dr Poe’s expertise is nurse-midwifery professional issues.

Education: Professor Poe received her BSN in Nursing at the University of North Carolina and her MN in Nurse Midwifery at Emory University. She received her DSN in Maternal Child Health Nursing at the University of Alabama.
