Prospective Students > Practicum Preceptor Program (P3)!

This website and brief video will introduce you to the role of Gator Nurse Preceptor as you begin to develop your resources and skills for a positive collaborative experience. The video provides you with background about what preceptors do and how important they are to the development of a competent future nurse. The links on this website give you immediate resources and downloadable forms that may be helpful over the time you will spend with your student.

Preceptorship at the University of Florida is a structured arrangement for mentoring students to help ensure that each student is prepared to enter the world of work. Our preceptors and students are paired within the clinical environments for which students hope to prepare themselves. The preceptor lays the groundwork for that future by providing opportunities to learn with gradually diminishing supervision. Several studies have demonstrated benefits of using preceptors to develop competency and problem-solving abilities in students. How you work in these setting depends on you, the environment, and the student. These web resources may help guide you.

“Precepting provides an opportunity for anticipatory socialization and internalization of knowledge pivotal in job and role satisfaction for nursing students… A preceptored clinical can expose students to positive and negative behaviors while reinforcing content learned” (Lockwood-Rayermann, 2003). We hope these web pages and resources will add to your continued involvement as a Gator Nurse Preceptor!
