Program Description and Criteria

Prerequisites

College of Nursing GPA of 3.7, calculated from the first semester of entry into the College of Nursing, will be the minimum requirement for entrance into the Honors Program. Students have to identify a CON faculty mentor or doctoral student prior to application for which they will align themselves with a faculty mentor.

Prior to Applying

Students seeking entry into the honors program will need to identify a project consistent with that year’s theme and a faculty or doctoral student mentor available to participate. It is recommended that applicants meet with the honors program coordinator for further clarification, advisement and discussion. Applicants should also make contact with potential mentors and discuss expectations.

Application

Students usually apply for acceptance into the Honors Program at the end of the junior year. Grade point averages will be verified after the end of the semester.

Honors Application

Enrollment/Registration

Students who are notified of acceptance into honors program should confirm their faculty mentor during the summer and fall semester of senior year and begin work on their honors project. They will be reminded in the fall to register for the spring NUR 4935: Honors Seminar in Nursing.

Course Design

Students will be working on a project which can take the form of thesis, clinical, service, quality improvement or educational module. It needs to have a written component summarizing the project. Upon completion of the project, the student will submit the paper to the faculty mentor. The faculty mentor will then review it and make comments and/or suggested edits. Students then makes recommended revisions. All Honors students will arrange for dissemination of their honor project at a specified annual public University/College event.

The Honors Subcommittee will review all completed theses for approval. The student may be asked to clarify certain aspects of the thesis at the discretion of the Committee. The decision of the Committee related to the successful completion of the thesis will be based on a simple majority.

Upon receipt of and response to recommendations and corrections, student submits paper in an electronic format to the CON Office of Academic and Student Affairs. One electronic copy must also be submitted to the University of Florida Honors Office for Magna Cum Laude or Summa Cum Laude designation.
