Alumna, Cathy Campbell, receives prestigious award at UVA

Cathy Campbell (BSN 1986, MSN 2000 & DNP 2004), associate professor of nursing and department chair at the University of Virginia School of Nursing recently received the University of Virginia Health’s 2022 Martin Luther King Jr. Award, the health system’s biggest annual equity and inclusion award. She was one of four clinician-scholars to earn this award. Campbell is a hospice nurse, an end-of-life expert, a Buddhist chaplain (she graduated from Upaya in 2019), and a Fulbright Global Scholar alumna. She has, most recently, studied support and educational systems for community health workers in South Africa and Thailand to buttress their end-of-life skills and understanding, as well as the end-of-life experiences of transgender elders and the kinds of care they need in particular.

A story about Cathy’s award is here; more about her work overseas is here, and an article about her work to support transgender elders at life’s end is here.
