UF College of Nursing PhD students Magali Rezende de Carvalho, MSN, APRN, and Hyehwan Yang, MSN, APRN, were recently selected as Jonas Scholars for the 2024-2026 cohort by Jonas Nursing and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

Scholars are selected based on their focus of study in a high-priority area and a career commitment to academic nursing education, according to Jonas Philanthropies.

Magali Rezende de Carvalho has spent 13 years specializing in wound and ostomy care and is a board-certified family nurse practitioner. She is focusing her doctoral studies on health disparities in wound healing.

Hyehwan Yang is a nurse practitioner of geriatric medicine at UF Health Shands Hospital. She has extensive primary and acute care clinical experience, which led her to pursue a PhD to develop enhanced care strategies for older adults. Her research interests include delirium, falls, and polypharmacy.

“We are so fortunate to have Magali and Hyehwan in the UF College of Nursing’s PhD program, and their selection as Jonas Scholars only solidifies what we’ve known all along – they are both phenomenal scholars and their leadership in nursing will continue to make an enormous impact on the health of patients, our communities, and our profession. Being recognized with the national award brings honor to the College of Nursing and the University of Florida,” said Angela Starkweather, PhD, ACNP-BC, FAANP, FAAN, UF Nursing assistant dean for research development and PhD program director.

Since 2008, the Jonas Scholars program is the signature initiative of Jonas Nursing, whose mission is to enhance the nursing profession by developing nurse leaders who will address the nursing shortage by educating the future nursing workforce and by investing in the health and well-being of underserved communities. This year, only 60 Scholars were selected from across the nation to participate in the program, which entails participation in the curriculum of leadership development hosted by Jonas Philanthropies over the two-year program and attending the Jonas Scholar Conference in Washington D.C.
