As a naturally inquisitive nurse and, honestly, a somewhat organizationally challenged individual, I have long dreamt of a world where the power of advanced data analytics and AI could be at our fingertips. Imagine a world where nurses have direct access to the cutting edge of innovative AI to help them tame vast amounts of clinical data to facilitate clinical decision-making. Imagine if nurses could leverage AI to automate time-consuming executive and administrative tasks, freeing them to focus on what truly matters: patient care. With the rapid advancement of AI in the last couple of years, this dream might be closer than we thought!
With this in mind, the FloGatorAI team is developing a series of resources in the form of AI Assistant Cookbooks for Nursing. The focus will be on prompt engineering for free or low-cost AI tools that can be used with limited to no technical background or training. The cookbook uses generative AI for various tasks and activities relevant to nurses and nursing. Generative AI is powered by advanced Large Language Models (LLMs), and is rapidly transforming various industries, including health care. Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that can create new content, such as text, images, or code, based on the information it has been trained on. Generative AI drives powerful tools that can learn patterns and relationships in data and then use that knowledge to generate something new. These tools can assist nurses with a wide range of tasks, from scheduling and organization or drafting patient education materials to summarizing complex medical literature.
Generative AI has been actively studied since the 1960s, but the past decade has seen a dramatic acceleration in generative AI capabilities. This has been made possible, in large part, by the exponential growth of digital data and increased computational power. In 2022, OpenAI’s launch of ChatGPT, a user-friendly chatbot for the general public, sparked an unprecedented surge in the development and adoption of AI-powered tools across various sectors. In health care, generative AI applications have the potential to improve efficiency, reduce burnout, and enhance the quality of patient care.
However, as with any rapid technological innovation, the explosive growth of generative AI has also given rise to critical concerns about several issues, including data privacy and security, bias and fairness, lack of transparency, and the potential for loss of human connection. These concerns should not be discounted, highlighting the need for ongoing discussions and the development of resources to help ensure that AI is used responsibly and ethically, particularly in health care.
Our Successes
The FloGatorAI editorial board members have certainly been active in the exciting world of nursing and AI this year. In 2024, the team published a combined 30 scientific papers, facilitated several workshops and seminars, and presented at conferences internationally. Dr. Lisiane Pruinelli launched an innovative AI tool to predict chronic pain in cancer patients and explored the impact of generative AI on nursing education. Dr. Hwayoung Cho secured research funding totaling $1.2 million, and Dr. Tamara Macieira and I were honored with Florida Nurses Association Icon Awards. More 2024 accomplishments are highlighted in the Spring and Summer issues of Gator Nurse.
As exciting as these scientific contributions and accomplishments are, we also recognize the importance of bringing these advancements into practice. We are committed to exploring how AI can empower nurses in their daily routines and address their daily practical challenges. We will continue striving toward these goals.
