The University of Florida College of Nursing rolled out the orange and blue carpet on Sunday for the inaugural Gator Nurse Supporter Orientation event in honor of those supporting the incoming fall class of Bachelor of Science in Nursing students.

Nearly 75 parents, partners, loved ones and advocates attended the event in the HPNP Building, where they learned more about the path their students will embark on starting Aug. 21.

Attendees met nursing faculty, staff and leadership, gained insight into the student experience and learned how their continued support will be essential to student success.

“Your student is about to embark on a life-changing journey, and you are part of that story,” said Shakira Henderson, PhD, DNP, MS, MPH, MBA, IBCLC, RNC-NIC, dean of the UF College of Nursing and chief nurse executive for UF Health. “Gator Nursing is a family, and today we welcome you into that family.”

Those who attended learned how best to support students through academic challenges and personal development. Sessions highlighted the importance of balance, communication and resilience, while also offering insight into the rigorous but rewarding path of nursing education.

Sarah Lorenzini, MSN, RN, CCRN, CEN, attended the orientation to support her daughter, Avi, an incoming BSN student. Lorenzini is a nurse and leads the rapid response team at the HCA Florida North Florida Hospital and also hosts the podcast Rapid Response RN, which shares real life stories on the front lines of nursing to help current nurses feel confident in emergency response.

Lorenzini said she wishes her nursing program had offered an orientation geared toward family and friends.

“In nursing, we’re moving to being proactive instead of reactive,” Lorenzini said. “I love that the UF College of Nursing is being proactive from all angles to support their students’ success.”

While students have their orientation this week, the first-ever family-centered event was also a chance to celebrate their efforts in preparing, nurturing and encouraging their student.

“This is a special event just for you,” Henderson said. “You were there through the uncertainty of the application process, the thrill of the acceptance letter and the pride of seeing their dream take flight.”

As students begin their nursing studies, the college remains committed to supporting both the students and the families who help make their dreams possible. With events like the Gator Nurse Supporter Orientation, the college reinforces its belief that nursing is not only a profession, but a shared calling nurtured by connection, compassion and community.
