Staja “Star” Booker, PhD, RN, FAAN, associate professor at the University of Florida College of Nursing, was named a 2026 University of Florida Research Foundation Professor in recognition of her outstanding contributions to research and scholarship.

The UFRF Professorship honors faculty members who have established a strong record of research excellence and demonstrated the ability to make a lasting impact within their fields. Since the program began in 1997, the foundation has recognized more than 1,000 UF researchers whose work advances discovery, innovation and the university’s national and global reputation.

“This incredible recognition reflects Dr. Booker’s exceptional commitment to research excellence and her meaningful impact on nursing science. Her work continues to advance innovative, evidence-based solutions that improve health outcomes and strengthen our mission of transforming health through nursing leadership and discovery. We are incredibly proud to celebrate this well-deserved honor,” said Shakira Henderson, PhD, DNP, MS, MPH, MBA, IBCLC, RNC-NIC, UF College of Nursing dean and system chief nurse executive for UF Health.

Booker’s recognition reflects her continued leadership in nursing research and her commitment to improving health outcomes through science-driven inquiry and community-based engagement. Her work in aging populations focuses on addressing complex chronic pain challenges and advancing evidence-based solutions that improve patient care and quality of life.

“UFRF Professors represent the depth and breadth of research excellence at the University of Florida,” said David Norton, UF’s vice president for research. “Their work reflects sustained scholarly achievement, leadership within their disciplines, and a commitment to pursuing new knowledge that benefits society.”

Recipients are selected through a peer-review process that includes nominations from department chairs and evaluations by college leadership. Consideration is based on recent research accomplishments, including publications, external funding, honors and awards, intellectual property development and other measures of scholarly impact.

“Dr. Booker exemplifies the very best of research excellence through her dedication to advancing nursing science and improving patient outcomes. Her work is thoughtful, impactful and deeply rooted in addressing complex health challenges that matter to the communities we serve. This recognition confirms her outstanding scholarship, leadership and the lasting difference she continues to make in our field,” said Lisiane Pruinelli, PhD, MSc, RN, FAMIA, FAAN, interim chair of the college’s Biobehavioral Nursing Science Department.

Each professorship is awarded for three years and includes a $5,000 annual salary supplement and a one-time $3,000 research grant. Funding comes from the university’s share of royalties and licensing revenue generated through UF innovations.

Booker will be recognized along with the 2026 UFRF Professors at a university event later this year, adding another milestone to the College of Nursing’s continued leadership in research, innovation and transformative health outcomes.
