COLLEGE OF NURSING DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION AWARD The Nomination Period for the 2022 Award is now open!
The award reflects the college’s mission of working with and for diverse communities as educators, clinicians/scientists, and advocates for diverse and inclusive nursing education. The Diversity and Inclusion Award recognizes faculty’s leading role in advancing diversity, inclusion, and sustainability in the College of Nursing and/or in the profession.
The University of Florida College of Nursing Diversity and Inclusion Award recognizes and celebrates the efforts of the College of Nursing faculty of fostering diversity, inclusion, and combating anti-Black and other forms of racism in the areas of teaching, research, and/or service. The award reflects the college’s mission of working with and for diverse communities as educators, clinicians/scientists, and advocates for diverse and inclusive nursing education. The Diversity and Inclusion Award recognizes faculty’s leading role in advancing diversity, inclusion, and sustainability in the College of Nursing and/or in the profession.
For this award, the AACN definitions will be considered: “Diversity is defined as individual attributes that extend beyond race, age, and gender to also include, but are not limited to, characteristics such as national origin, immigrant status, language, color, disability, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, veteran status, and family structures. Inclusion is defined as a culture that encourages collaboration, flexibility, and fairness as well as leverages diversity so that all individuals can participate and contribute to their full potential. An inclusive environment must be created for diversity to flourish. Sustainability occurs when structures and strategies, to manage diversity and institutionalize a culture of inclusion, are in place”.
THE FACULTY NOMINEE SHOULD DEMONSTRATE EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING, RESEARCH, AND/OR SERVICE.
In evaluating the effectiveness of diversity in teaching, we will consider the extent and skill of the faculty’s participation in the general guidance (classroom/clinical), mentoring, and advising of students. Consideration will be given to the effectiveness of creating an academic environment that is open and encouraging to all students, including the development of particularly effective strategies for the educational advancement of students in various under-represented groups. Examples of significant types of teaching effectiveness evidence are the development of new and effective techniques of instruction, including content, and techniques that meet the needs of students from groups that are underrepresented in nursing.
Scholarship/Research and other Creative Work
Diversity in scholarship/research includes contributions to the professional literature that demonstrate a deeper understanding and application of the value of diversity and inclusion in nursing practice and research. We will consider authorship of textbook chapters, reports, and publications as evidence.
In evaluating the effectiveness of diversity in service, activities should be examined for evidence that an implemented strategy or approach successfully addresses a well-defined professional or clinical problem. Examples include the development and implementation of recruitment, retention, and mentoring strategies targeted at attracting and retaining qualified faculty and students from under-represented groups.
The faculty can self-nominate or can be nominated by a colleague. The nomination letter should not exceed 500 words in length and should be double-spaced, 12-point font, with one-inch margins. One letter of support attesting to the evidence must be included in the application. All nominations should be electronically submitted via the online application form.
The nomination letter should include the following information:
- How the faculty has been instrumental in enhancing diversity and inclusion and combating anti-Black and other forms of racism in the areas of teaching, research, and/or service in the College of Nursing, at the university or in the profession.
- Describe the initiative(s) developed or involved and give example(s) of engagement.
- Describe the impact of the effort (e.g. number of individuals involved, program/policy outcomes, valid measures of success)
Decision: The assistant dean of diversity, inclusion, and global affairs will form a committee with three faculty members of the HSC colleges. The committee will recommend the award recipient to the dean.
Award: Recipient will receive a $500 award (for professional development) and a plaque.
