Student Interest Groups

The College of Nursing offers four student-interest groups:

  • Multicultural & Ethnic Diversity in Nursing

  • Men in Nursing

  • LGBTQ+ in Nursing

  • International Nursing

Membership in these extracurricular groups offers students opportunities for networking and mentoring, professional development and leadership skills by fostering communication between undergraduate and graduate students and faculty. In general, these groups meet once a month in the College of Nursing. Students from the Jacksonville campus can join any student-interest group and connect to meetings via Skype. Please contact the faculty advisor to be included in the invitation for the meetings.


Multicultural & Ethnic Diversity in Nursing

The goal of the Multicultural & Ethnic Diversity in Nursing student-interest group is to generate dialogue about professional development and leadership for self-identified multicultural nursing students. This group provides opportunities for conversation around the following aspects of multicultural nursing:

  • Facilitating professional development for multicultural nurses
  • Learning different cultures
  • Discussing challenges and triumphs that multicultural nurses face
  • Learning about strategies for success and obtaining information about key organizations for multicultural nurses
  • Facilitating strong collegial relationships between multicultural nurses and other nurses

Men in Nursing

The goal of the Men in Nursing student-interest group is to generate dialogue about professional development and leadership for male nursing students. This group provides opportunities for conversation around the following aspects of males in the nursing profession:

  • Facilitating professional development for men in nursing
  • Discussing challenges and triumphs that males in nursing face
  • Learning about strategies for success and obtaining information about key organizations for male nurses
  • Facilitating strong collegial relationships between male nurses and other nurses in the discipline

LBGTQ+ in Nursing

The goal of this inclusive student-interest group is to build a safe supportive community that affords members the opportunity to generate dialogue about professional development and leadership for LGBTQ+ identified nursing students and allies. This group will provide opportunities for conversation around the following aspects of LGBTQ+ nursing:

  • Increasing awareness of LGBTQ+ health disparities and the intersectionality of external factors affecting health
  • Fostering personal and professional growth and development for LGBTQ+ members in nursing through open, honest and respectful conversation
  • Discussing challenges and triumphs that LGBT+ members in nursing face
  • Learning the importance of advocating for quality health care to meet the current and future health needs of the LGBTQ+ community
  • Learning about strategies for success and obtaining information about key organizations for LGBTQ+ nurses
  • Facilitating strong collegial relationships between LGBTQ+ nurses and other nurses in the discipline

International Nursing

The goal of the International Nursing student-interest group is to generate dialogue about professional development and leadership for International nursing students. This group will facilitate conversation around the following aspects of International nursing:

  • Facilitating professional development related to International nursing issues
  • Learning about different cultures
  • Discussing challenges and triumphs facing international nursing students
  • Learning strategies for success and obtaining information on key international organizations
  • Facilitating strong collegial relationships between international nursing students and other students and professionals
