Living in Gainesville
Gainesville and the surrounding county is home to 250,000 citizens and serves as the cultural, educational and commercial center for the north central Florida region. The city provides a full range of municipal services, including police and fire protection; traffic engineering services; refuse and recycling services through a franchised operator; recreation and parks; cultural and nature services; and necessary administrative services to support these activities. Additionally, the city owns a regional transit system, a municipal airport, a 72-par championship golf course and a utility. The Alachua County School District is one of the highest-rated in Florida, having earned an ‘A’ grade from the state for three straight years based on the performance of our schools and students. We have the highest SAT scores in the state, scores that are also well above the national averages.
Known for its preservation of historic buildings and the beauty of its natural surroundings, Gainesville’s numerous parks, museums and lakes provide entertainment to thousands of visitors. Because of its beautiful landscape and urban “forest,” Gainesville is one of the most attractive cities in Florida.

Gainesville residents can choose from more than 70 nature parks in and surrounding the city to picnic, swim, hike, camp, bike or fish. Nearby Gulf and Atlantic coasts are perfect for weekend beach getaways, and within a short two to three hour drive are attractions such as Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, Busch Gardens and the St. Augustine Historic District.
